A famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi states, ‘You should never lose hope in humanity, for humanity is like an ocean. Even if a few drops of the ocean get dirty or contaminated, the whole ocean doesn’t get affected.’ Mahatma Gandhi showcased his faith and belief in humanity, which is the core essence of the human race, and urged upon the need for all humans to do the same.

Humanity is what we all have in common, a link that binds us all through, that connects us all together, and gives rise to the emotions of belongingness. One of the ever-existing questions of our lives is ‘What are we doing for others, how are we trying to make an impact on the lives of millions of others around us?’ This question is a measure of our humanity, the degree of sensitivity and concern that we showcase towards all the inhabitants of this planet. Humanity doesn’t just deal with the attitude we exhibit towards humankind, but also towards all other creatures with whom we share the planet. World Humanitarian Day is a day dedicated to transforming humans' behavior towards one another, this planet, its resources, and other living beings.

We, humans, need to identify the issues that pose a threat to our existence, that act as the ills of society, be it climate change, food insecurity, gender inequality, extreme poverty, and so on, and set out on the journey to discovering solutions to combat these issues that might affect our survival on this planet, together. ‘There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because the conscience tells him it is right’, says Martin Luther King Jr. Thus, comes our responsibility to ensure the safety of our planet and all the creatures inhabiting it.

Our Planet Earth has bestowed upon us a wide variety of natural resources, that are capable of making our lives much more comfortable and are intended at helping in making a productive utilization of the human resource.

Humans have been, however, exploiting these natural resources for a long time in the name of their full utilization, which has compelled nature to showcase its fury in the form of frequent natural disasters that affect human existence considerably.

One such vital natural resource is water, whose major percentage exists in the form of seas and oceans. Human actions, have however caused the temperatures to rise and sea levels to grow higher, thus, resulting in droughts in certain parts of the world, while floods in others. All of this consequently leads to the degradation of oceans and the marine life that exists under the deep sea levels.

Human actions such as chemical production in huge factories, burning of fossil fuels, manufacturing and processing of items in the industries using toxic materials, and much more, often cause pollution of the environment, in all different aspects, be it land, water or noise pollution. Factories often make use of ocean water for their manufacturing processes, utilize this water, process it and release the hot resultant water back into the oceans, thus causing the contamination of oceans and a grave threat to the existing marine life.

Human beings are often engaged in unwise deeds which are majorly aimed at fulfilment of their selfish needs, without a major consideration for the harsh impacts these actions might have. Activities such as immersion of idols in the oceans as a matter of religious practice, bathing animals in the sea water and washing clothes at the ocean beds, often constitute a major part of harmful human actions.

We need to realize that our actions can act as a grave threat to the existence of this planet of us, which seemingly is the only place suitable for human survival in this galaxy, as of now.

Thus, it's time to join hands, spread our voice and take a step forward to preserve the natural resources Mother Nature has blessed us with and ensure the protection of our oceans which act as a rich source of vital minerals and an essential life supporting element, water.

Listen to the song "All is found" & cherish the existence of rivers & oceans on this earth.

There’s a need to call our generation a truly blessed one, coz we’ve had the chance, at some point in our lives, to live amidst a bunch of trees, to breathe a relatively fresh clean air, to be equipped with enough water to satisfy our immediate needs and finally, to have a glimpse of some rare creatures that might exist on our Planet Earth.

But I feel really sorry for the generations to come, for they shall never have the chance to sit in the lap of nature to attain a state of peace and get rid of their worries, not even a drop of water shall be available for some emergency case, no forests, no trees to help bind the soil, to cause rainfall, to provide foodstuffs and raw materials for product manufacturing, and most significantly no trees to provide oxygen...

Well, I feel sorry for the future generations for they shall have a dark bleak future, they’ll have to bear with the serious repercussions of actions they never performed but their previous generations, that is, we did.

What we do today, should logically show its impacts in the future, however, the intensity of our actions is so high that their harsh impacts are visible even today in the form of global warming, the climate crisis, rising ocean levels, and increasing frequency of natural calamities, etc. Aren’t these instances of environmental damage enough for us, humans to realize the grave threat to our planet, aren’t we still ready to limit our needs and make an effort to efficiently utilize the natural resources, aren’t we still awake?

It’s absolutely essential that we know what the need of the hour is, and we take a step forward, make an effort and incorporate sustainable measures into our lifestyle, so that there’s some hope for the future generations, to be able to live their lives on this planet Earth the way we could, with all the natural resources. We need to learn to live sustainably in harmony with nature, for we have Only One Earth and we need to conserve, preserve it, and the key to doing this lies in one word – Sustainability. Sustainability deals with the method of utilizing natural resources in a manner that enables the present generations to fulfill their requirements and at the same time doesn't sacrifice the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

The problems relating to the environment have already been solved; we already have the facts and solutions. What we need to do is just wake up and change. It’s high time now, we humans, need to wake up, see what’s actually going on around us, the environment is being deteriorated and nature is losing its glory and natural calamities are on a rise, all because of our selfish unwise deeds. Thus, we need to join hands, come together and bring a change...
